Pro-Am only
No Park grinding, no MyTEAM, no Rec randoms. These are for competitive Pro-Am: spacing, coverage, builds, and how a five stays organized.
Switch, ice, or drop has to be live before the ball handler turns the corner. Late calls create blow-bys. The lock and backend should talk on every dead ball, not after the screen is already set.
First eight seconds are for getting a mismatch or a paint touch. If the defense is set, flow into a set. Comp Pro-Am teams lose when the one with the ball hunts a clip instead of a good shot.
Gambling for a steal on the ball is how Pro-Am games get broken open. Stay on hip, take away the strong hand, and only peel if the backend calls the tag. Your job is to make the other team’s best player uncomfortable for 24 seconds.
Help off a popper only when your lock or swing has already recovered. Verticality and positioning beat chasing chase-down blocks. If you leave the dunker spot empty, the extra pass is an and-one.
If you drift into the lane, the ball handler has nowhere to drive and the backend has no help responsibility. Hold the hash or corner until the kick comes. One extra pass from a spaced floor beats a contested midrange.
A 99 driving dunk lock who cannot stay in front is a Rec build wearing a Pro-Am jersey. Make the attributes that win your seat: perimeter D and steal for locks, pass accuracy and ball handle for the one, interior D and rebound for the five, catch-and-shoot for hash and corner.
Save one for a late inbound and one for a broken set after a turnover. Burning both in the first quarter because someone is tilted is how close Pro-Am games slip. The captain should own the timeout, not the loudest mic.
After a make, say matchups out loud. After a miss, say who has the inbound and who is leaking. Silent teams give up the next possession before the ball is even inbounded.
Comp film is not only the 20-bomb. Clip the live-ball turnovers, the late closeouts, and the help that left a shooter. Five minutes of that after league night does more than another random HOF Open run.
Pick two actions your group can run without talking: a Spain pick, a horns slip, a backdoor if the lock overplays. Practice those more than mixing randoms. Pro-Am rewards the group that is on time and on the same page.
If the scouting note is “leave him, he cannot shoot,” that is the only time you stunt. Everyone else stays home. Helping off a catch-and-shoot hash is the most common way underdogs steal a quarter.
Captains notice who is in the party five minutes early. If you want a real Pro-Am seat, treat the start time like a job. The player who is late twice gets replaced by someone with a worse build and a better clock.
After the film, find a five. This is still a recruiting platform.
